Enclosed Transport

What enclosed auto transport is

Enclosed transport puts your vehicle inside a fully sealed, hard-sided trailer, protected from rain, snow, road salt, gravel, sun, and the eyes of everyone on the highway. Enclosed carriers move fewer vehicles at a time, usually one to six, and the drivers who operate them specialize in high-value cars. Most enclosed trailers are equipped with hydraulic liftgates, so a low-clearance sports car is raised onto the deck flat rather than driven up a ramp.

Enclosed is the right choice when the cost of the vehicle, the condition of its finish, or simple peace of mind makes the extra expense worthwhile. It typically runs 40 to 60 percent more than open transport on the same lane.

Vehicles that should go enclosed

  • Luxury and exotic cars: Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, McLaren, Aston Martin, high-end Mercedes, BMW, and Audi
  • Classic, vintage, and restored vehicles, especially with original paint or fresh restoration
  • Low-clearance cars that cannot climb a standard ramp
  • Vehicles with new paint, vinyl wraps, or ceramic coatings
  • Race cars, show cars, and vehicles headed to auction or concours events
  • Any car whose value or sentimental weight makes you want to stop worrying

Soft-sided vs. hard-sided

Some carriers offer soft-sided (curtain) enclosed trailers at a slight discount. They protect from weather but less from road debris. We recommend hard-sided enclosed for anything valued above $100,000 or for vehicles with delicate finishes. Tell your dispatcher which you prefer; the quote tool prices hard-sided by default.

Single-car and dedicated enclosed

For the most valuable shipments, a dedicated single-vehicle enclosed carrier is available: one truck, one car, direct from your door to the destination with no other stops. It is the premium option and priced accordingly, but it offers the fastest transit and the least handling.

What to expect

Enclosed carriers are fewer in number than open carriers, so pickup windows can be a day or two longer, especially outside major metro areas. From our New Jersey offices in Red Bank, Middletown, Princeton, and Cherry Hill, where enclosed demand is highest, availability is usually excellent. Every enclosed carrier in our partner network is verified for authority, safety record, and cargo insurance at limits appropriate to high-value vehicles; ask your dispatcher for the certificate.

FAQ

Enclosed Auto Transport questions

How much more does enclosed cost?

Typically 40 to 60 percent more than open transport on the same route. A New Jersey to Florida shipment that costs around $1,000 open would run roughly $1,400 to $1,600 enclosed.

What insurance limits do enclosed carriers carry?

Enclosed carriers in our network generally carry cargo policies from $250,000 to $1,000,000 or more. Tell us your vehicle's value when booking so we match it with a carrier whose coverage is appropriate, and request the certificate before pickup.

Can my car go on a liftgate?

Yes. Most enclosed carriers we dispatch are liftgate-equipped, which is essential for low-clearance vehicles. Mention your car's ground clearance when booking.

Do you ship to car shows and auctions?

Yes. Enclosed transport to Barrett-Jackson, Mecum, Amelia Island, Pebble Beach, and other events is common. Book early for the weeks around major shows.
